Mechanical Engineer/Plastics Engineer
Salary Range: $130,000 to $150,000
Location: Fremont, CA

EnerVenue is looking for a Mechanical Engineer/Plastics Engineer to join our growing start-up company. You will be responsible for designing various plastic components of battery cell design for advanced energy storage applications. You will optimize component design for large scale manufacturing by working closely with the supply chain team and vendors. You will ensure that the product meets engineering requirements through careful selection of materials and manufacturing processes. You will design and conduct experiments to verify consistent quality, reliability and performance of battery components. We offer competitive compensation, friendly atmosphere, and more!
Responsibilities
- Design new products using computer aided design software including mechanical stress simulations and moldflow analysis
- Leverage internal and external resources to fabricate parts for prototype battery cells
- Oversee the assembly and testing of prototype battery cells
- Work with manufacturing engineering/design group to optimize products for effective manufacturing
- Collaborate with supply management and manufacturing engineering groups on material selection, design feasibility and aesthetics of new energy storage platform
- Conduct failure mode analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions
- Conduct research on new materials or product manufacturing processes or techniques to improve existing products or develop new ones
- Develop and execute experiments to understand the degradation of plastic parts in different operating environments
Experience and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Polymer Science, Material Science and Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and qualification of plastic components in harsh operating conditions
- Extensive knowledge of the material properties of plastics in a wide range of environments
- Knowledge of industrial equipment and experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
- Experience designing plastic parts for machining, injection molding, vacuum forming and extrusion
- Experience with accelerated life cycle testing
- Solid understanding of the chemical process of degradation and its effect on the mechanical properties of plastic materials
- Experience with various methods of plastic bonding and welding
- Understanding of the fundamental mechanics of gas permeation in metals and plastics
- Proficiency using 2D & 3D CAD software such as NX, CATIA, SolidWorks or similar, including fabrication drawings using appropriate material specifications and tolerances
- Practical knowledge and experience related to gas tanks and pressure vessels
- Ability to interact effectively with suppliers, partners, vendors, and colleagues
- Strong written and oral communication

Battery Test Engineer

EnerVenue is looking for a Material Science Engineer to join our growing start-up company. You will be responsible for designing various plastic components of battery cell design for advanced energy storage applications. You will optimize component design for large scale manufacturing by working closely with the supply chain team and vendors. You will ensure that the product meets engineering requirements through careful selection of materials and manufacturing processes. Responsibilities
- Perform battery testing tasks according to R&D and production needs, including:
- Testing battery cell performance, editing cycling test procedures, and supervising data collection.
- Analyzing and summarizing test data, developing data analysis templates, and plotting data curves.
- Building testing platforms using data acquisition equipment, power supplies, sensors, and other hardware to meet R&D testing requirements.
- Managing and documenting battery testing procedures, including defining test steps and troubleshooting test failures. Able to clearly communicate technical matters, scheduling considerations, deliverables, and technical requirements.
- Assist in managing the battery testing laboratory, including:
- Installation, debugging, regular maintenance, and follow-up on troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Complying with and maintaining standard operating procedures to ensure the lab remains safe, clean, and orderly.
- Developing usage plans for test equipment based on testing requirements, including battery cell testing system channels and high/low temperature environmental chambers.
- Collaborating with mechanical engineers and equipment suppliers to design, assemble, and document battery test fixtures.
Experience and Education Requirements
- Hold a BS/MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics or a related field, coupled with more than two years of experience with batteries.
- Proven experience in testing various battery cells, including Li-ion, Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, etc. Analyzing data to characterize and validate cells and formulating actionable plans to enhance cell design and processes for improved performance.
- Direct hands-on experience with battery cyclers/testers like Maccor, Arbin, Neware, Bio-logic, Chroma, etc. Proficient in analyzing raw test data generated by these testers to characterize cells, with a keen awareness of data quality considerations.
- Capability of catching and diagnosing testing issues when the testing result appears abnormal.
- Familiar with analysis and processing battery testing data.
- In-depth understanding of charging and discharging characteristics of batteries, including knowledge of fundamental concepts such as energy, capacity, DCIR, Coulombic efficiency, OCV, SoC, C-rate, etc. Ability to connect design and material choices with cell performance.
- Experience in managing cell testing plans, defining test plans and protocols, overseeing testing schedules, and reporting results with comprehensive analysis.
- Excellent clarity in presenting data and technical information. Commitment to integrity and presenting accurate data.
- Hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to work independently and wear multiple hats.
